The 5 Free Boss’s Day Cards

All five are work appropriate Boss’s Day cards: clean layouts, calm colors, and kind messages. There are no cartoon bosses, no “World’s Best Boss” clichés, and nothing that jokes about pay or performance.

1. Quiet Office: “Thank You for Leading With Kindness”

A cream card with a thin gold frame and an elegant serif headline, made as a professional Boss’s Day card and a Boss’s Day thank you card in one. It looks like stationery from a good paper shop, and it’s the safest choice for a senior leader, a new boss, or any workplace that values a formal tone. Inside message: “Your guidance, patience and trust make this team better. Thank you for everything you do.”

2. Modern Color Block: “Happy Boss’s Day”

A dark plum block with bold white type and a bright orange accent, with the line “You make the team better.” It suits a modern, creative or startup workplace, and it’s the one card in the set that stands out on a desk. This design uses the most ink. Inside message: “Thank you for making work a place we want to be. We appreciate you.”

3. Paper Icons: “You Make Mondays A-Latte Easier”

A soft cream card with a flat coffee-cup icon. It’s a light, friendly pun that teases the day, not the person. Choose it for a relaxed boss who enjoys a little humor. Inside message: “Thanks for everything you do. We’re lucky to have you.”

4. Handwritten Note: “Thank You for Believing in Us”

A warm paper-style card with a handwritten headline and a hand-drawn underline. It feels personal without being sentimental, and it’s the best fit for a mentor or a boss who helped your career. Inside message: “You make us better at our jobs and better as a team. Thank you.”

5. Group Boss’s Day Card: “From All of Us”

A soft sage card with a line-art sprig. The front says “From all of us,” and the inside has 16 signature lines, so everyone can add a name and one specific line. It’s a ready-made group Boss’s Day card, so the person organizing doesn’t need to design anything. See the group card steps below.

One rule for any card: keep the humor about the day, never about the boss. If you wouldn’t say it in front of HR, don’t print it.

Pick the card that fits your boss and your workplace. All eight print on standard US Letter paper, two cards per page.

1. Thank-You Card: “Thank You for Leading With Heart”

A printable thank you card for a boss, in dark purple, with a clear message. It’s the safest choice for a senior leader or a boss you don’t know well. The built-in message is short and warm. Add a line about one thing they did.

2. Funny Coffee Card: “You Make Mondays A-Latte Easier”

A light, funny card with a coffee cup. It’s one of the funny Boss’s Day cards that teases the day, not the person. Use it for a relaxed boss who enjoys a pun.

3. Heartfelt Card: “Thank You for Believing in Us”

A clean, framed card with space to write a longer note. It’s the best choice for a mentor-style boss or a boss who helped your career.

4. Group Boss’s Day Card

A Boss’s Day card from the team, with eight signature lines. Everyone adds a name and one specific line. This is the easiest group Boss’s Day card to organize. See the steps below.

5. “Boss of the Year” Award

6. Belated Boss’s Day Card: “Better Late Than Never”

For when you missed the date. A warm, no-fuss belated card with room for your own line.

7. Blank Boss’s Day Card

A simple card with a clean header and writing lines. Choose this if you want to write your own message from scratch.

8. Boss’s Day Coupon: One Meeting-Free Hour

How to Print a Folded Card on Letter Paper (5×7 Boss’s Day Card)

Boss’s Day cards printable at home work best when you know the steps. A folded Boss’s Day card is 10 x 7 inches opened, and that fits on a standard US Letter sheet turned sideways. Here is how to get a crisp result.

What you need: white cardstock (about 65 lb), scissors or a paper trimmer, and an A7 envelope.

Option A: Simple (print one side, write inside)

  1. Open the card’s Folded PDF and print page 1 only.
  2. In your print settings, choose Actual size or 100%. Never “Fit to page.”
  3. Use your printer’s cardstock or heavy paper setting if it has one.
  4. Cut along the corner marks. The color runs slightly past the marks, so you won’t see a white edge.
  5. Fold on the center marks, printed side out. The inside stays white for your own handwriting, like a store-bought Boss’s Day greeting card.

Option B: Full card (printed inside message)

  1. Print page 1 on the front of the paper.
  2. Put the sheet back so page 2 prints on the back, or print double-sided and choose flip on the short edge.
  3. Cut and fold as above.

Test first. Printers feed paper differently, so do one test on plain paper. If the inside prints upside down, switch “flip on short edge” to “flip on long edge.”

About white edges. Most home printers can’t print to the paper’s edge. That’s why each file has extra background (called bleed) and crop marks: you cut the card out of a larger printed sheet, so the color reaches every edge.

Flat Boss’s Day Cards, Photo Prints and Print Shops

Don’t have a good printer? A flat Boss’s Day card has three other options:

  • Flat card at home: the flat Letter PDF centers one 5 x 7 card on the page with crop marks. Cut it out and write on the back.
  • Print shop: bring the flat 5 x 7 PDF and ask for 5 x 7 on cardstock at 100% size.
  • Photo kiosk or photo service: upload the JPG (1500 x 2100 pixels, 300 dpi) and order a 5 x 7 print. Many pharmacies and photo shops offer this for a small fee, and it often looks better than home printing.

Paper, Ink and Envelopes

  • Paper: white or bright white cardstock around 65 lb feels like a real card. This Neenah bright white cardstock is a popular, well-reviewed choice. Thicker than about 80 lb can jam a home printer.
  • Envelopes: a 5 x 7 card fits an A7 envelope (5.25 x 7.25 inches). A pack of white A7 envelopes covers the whole set.
  • Ink: the Color Block card uses the most ink. The Quiet Office, Paper Icons, Handwritten and Group cards use far less. Print in draft or standard quality to save ink, and use “high quality” for the card you actually give.

What to Write in a Boss’s Day Card (Printable or Not)

The best Boss’s Day card ideas follow three steps:

  1. Say thanks. Start with “Thank you for…”
  2. Name one specific thing. A project, a piece of advice, a time they listened.
  3. Add a short wish. “Happy Boss’s Day!”

Example: “Thank you for backing me on the client rollout. It gave me confidence. Happy Boss’s Day!”

Specific beats generic. For 100+ ready-made lines, see our Boss’s Day card messages, and for short sayings to quote, see our Boss’s Day quotes.

Make Your Printable Card Feel Personal: DIY Boss’s Day Card Ideas

A printed design is the base. A few small touches turn it into a DIY Boss’s Day card your boss will keep.

  1. Add a photo. A small team photo taped inside makes it personal.
  2. Hand-letter the envelope. Use your boss’s name and a short line, like “Open when you need a smile.”
  3. Include a tiny treat, like a tea bag or a wrapped candy, taped to the back.
  4. Write on sticky notes. Each team member adds one note, and you stick them inside.
  5. Add a drawing. A simple doodle shows effort and humor.

Save Ink: Which Designs Print Cheapest

The dark cards (Thank-You, Belated, Coupon) use more ink. If you want to save ink, choose the light cards: Funny Coffee, Heartfelt, Group, Boss of the Year or Blank. Print in draft mode, and use the cardstock setting for crisp color.

How to Organize a Group Boss’s Day Card

A signed card from the whole team is one of the best Boss’s Day ideas for work. Here’s how to do it without chaos.

  1. Pick one organizer. One person prints the card and collects signatures.
  2. Print the group card on cardstock. For a bigger team, print two and tape the signature sections together.
  3. Send it around two days early. Ask each person for a name and one specific line.
  4. Keep it optional. No one should feel pressured.
  5. Hand it over at a good moment, like the start of a team meeting or at the end of the day.

Remote or hybrid team? Send the printable as a PDF, and ask each person to type a line in a shared document. Then paste the lines onto the card, or send the document as a virtual Boss’s Day card. See our Boss’s Day ideas for remote employees.

If your boss is remote, a printable mailed card still lands well, as long as it arrives on time. Otherwise send the PDF by email or chat.

Boss’s Day Card Etiquette

  • Sign it by hand. Handwriting makes a printed card personal.
  • Keep the humor kind. Skip jokes about pay, mood, or mistakes.
  • Don’t pressure coworkers to sign or contribute.
  • Check your workplace rules if your boss is in a regulated role or the public sector. A card is almost always fine.
  • Send it on or before October 16. If you’re late, use the belated card.

FAQ: Printable Boss’s Day Cards

Where can I get free printable Boss’s Day cards? Download the free set on this page. It has five designs, each in folded, flat and JPG versions.

What size are the cards? A 5 x 7 inch card. The folded version opens to 10 x 7 inches and prints on a Letter sheet turned sideways. They fit an A7 envelope.

What paper should I use? White cardstock around 65 lb. Regular paper works in a pinch, but cardstock looks and feels like a real card.

Can I edit the text? The files are print-ready PDFs and JPGs, so the printed wording is fixed. Each card has space to write your own message, and the group card is made for adding names.

How do I print a card with an inside message? Print page 1, then print page 2 on the back, flipping on the short edge. Do a test on plain paper first.

Why is there a white border around my printout? Home printers can’t print to the edge of the paper. Cut on the corner marks, and the color will reach every edge of the card.

What if I don’t have a printer? Take the PDF to a print shop, or upload the JPG to a photo service and order a 5 x 7 print.

How do I make a group Boss’s Day card? Print the group card, pass it around, and ask each person to add a name and one specific line.

Is it okay to give a funny Boss’s Day card? Usually, if your boss enjoys humor and the joke is about the day, not the person. If you’re unsure, choose the Quiet Office or Handwritten card.

Can I sell or share these cards? They’re for personal and workplace use. Please don’t resell or share the files. See the license in the download.

When is Boss’s Day? National Boss’s Day is October 16 every year.
